Open Question: I started this story and I was wondering if it is worth it to continue. Tell me your opinion. Thanks.? SUMMARY: Alec Kale is a boy who has cerebral palsy. He lives in Oklahoma County along an old dirt road in the north. Alec Kale is 7 years old and has to wear a steel brace on his right leg. He didn’t have many friends because he could never keep up with the other kids in the area. His best friend Nathaniel Kinley moved to Phoenix, Arizona 2 months ago. Now a new family is moving in next door and they have a girl his age, Jadelyn ‘Jade’ McLaughlin. They quickly become good friends and do everything together. Jade also has trouble walking because of Rickets. One day on his way home from school he saw a farmer that had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the four pups And set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy ‘Mister,’ he said, ‘I want to buy one of your puppies.’ ‘Well,’ said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, ‘These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.’ The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. ‘I’ve got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?’ ‘Sure,’ said the farmer. And with that he let out a long low whistle. ‘Here, Dolly!’ he called. Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up…. ‘I want that one,’ the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy’s side and said, ‘Son, you don’t want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.’ With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, ‘You see sir, I don’t run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands. ‘With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy. ‘How much?’ asked the little boy. ‘No charge,’ answered the farmer, ‘There’s no charge for love.’ The boy goes home with his new dog and ends up naming him Skip. Alec, Jade and Skip go for daily walks through the fields and along the dirt roads. 5 years later Alec becomes very sick, and is bed-bound. For a year Skip stayed by Alec’s bed keeping watch over him until one night Alec quietly slipped away from life with Skip right by his side. And in the morning Alec’s mother finds Skip on the ground beside Alec’s bed, dead. Skip died because he did what he needed to do in life and that was to make Alec Kale happy as long as he lived, and now with Alec gone, Skip had finished his duties. PREFACE: Jane and Howard were standing in room 147, at Wesley Medical Centre holding their two week old son, Alec. They heard a click and Dr. Nielson walked in. He turned to face Mr. and Mrs. Kale and ask them to step into his office. Mr. and Mrs. Kale sit down in the large, red leather chairs across from Dr. Nielson. As they all settled in Dr. Nielson began, “ After getting the results back from the tests, we have come to agreement that your son has Cerebral Palsy, since he was born 3 weeks premature. It is a fairly rare disease that will progress as he ages… “How long will he live?” requests Jane. “ Well, we cannot be sure how long he will live. People have been known to live more than 50 years with CP.” “Is there no cure for it Doctor?” asks Howard Kale. “I’m so sorry Mr. and Mrs. Kale but there is no diagnosis for this disease. The only thing we can say right now is to take him home and let him live as normal and happy a life as possible. Also when he is old enough to start moving around, we may have to put some sort of brace on his right leg as the bone seems very weak.” Jane Kale devoted her life to Alec. She quit her job and worked ‘round the clock to care for baby Alec. When he was around a year and a half Alec had to have a steel brace fit to his right leg so he was able to crawl and eventually walk. The Kale’s go back every six months to adjust the brace as Alec grows. BEGINNING OF CHAPTER 1: It was late in the afternoon, and then came the loud slam of the large metal door close. The moving truck was all packed up and ready to go. “Alec, say good-bye to Nathaniel they have to go now.” “Bye Nathaniel, I will “Bye Nathaniel, I will miss you, I wish you could stay here with me.” “I will never forget you Alec, Bye!” “Mommy? Why does Nathaniel have to leave? Where is he going? Will I ever see him again?” “Well, Nathaniel’s parents got new jobs in Phoenix, Arizona, and I am sure the Kinley’s will come back to visit. Now go inside and wash up for dinner.” Alec slowly limped inside, he was tired. Nathaniel was his best friend and his only friend.
