Voting Question: Possible Custody Issues?
I’m seventeen and pregnant. I’m due in February. My ex (The baby’s biological father.) isn’t a part of the situation. I got pregnant in May and didn’t find out until mid-June. In late May, I got drunk one time and until I found out I was pregnant, I smoked cigarettes. I done nothing of the sort since I’ve found out I’m pregnant. The day I got drunk, I cheated on my boyfriend, but I didn’t have sex with the guy and I never even kissed him, there was just some groping going on. I broke up with said boyfriend a few days later because though I was completely upfront about everything and apologetic, he was treating me very badly and patronizing me.

When I thought I may be pregnant, I told my ex and he tried to get back together with me. I refused. A week or so later, when I found out for sure, he said he wasn’t sure he wanted to be in my child’s life, but he would give us money. I told him I didn’t want his money. I called once a day for the next two or three days and he never answered. He told me he was going to tell his parents that night, so I wanted to see how it went. His mother called me back and asked for my father. She claimed that they were in need of a paternity test because I had been sleeping around and there was only a slim chance that her son could have impregnated me. That isn’t true, and I’m deeply disgusted by that, but I do understand that because I wasn’t completely faithful, whether I had sex with multiple people could be questioned.

I heard nothing from them for a few months, other than my ex’s mom calling and being rude to my dad about their need for a paternity test. My dad didn’t deny them one, he just said that I was two months pregnant and asked them to calm down for the next seven.

I got my phone taken away and was kicked out of my house in July. My ex texted me that his dad wanted to talk to my dad. His dad took him to my dad’s house, and I obviously wasn’t there. His parents are divorced and his dad lives forty-five minutes away from me. Once he found out I was pregnant, he immediately moved. Anyways, his dad said HE wanted to be in my child’s life and that if we needed anything, we should just call and he’ll help us. This all came from my ex’s father, not my ex. I haven’t heard from them since, not that I want anything to do with them to begin with.

In August, I texted my ex and told him I got my first ultrasound. He acted uninterested, didn’t care if the baby was healthy and didn’t ask me to send photos. We got into an argument, because I was upset that he was supposedly interested in being a father yet he didn’t care enough to ask about his child. He then said “It’s not like I’d get to see the pictures for a few months anyways.” This, to me, sounded like he had no interest in my pregnancy, but expected to just pick up and be a father as soon as I went through extreme labor. His father also said they wanted to be there for me ‘every step of the way.’ It sounds more like every step after I have the baby, not every actual step.

I’m not sure how to prove it (His parents did make him take a drug test, but I don’t think it was on done at a doctor’s office.) but he was smoking weed when we were together. He’s had nothing to do with me since I got pregnant and he’s just been really horrible in general. In Oklahoma, if I don’t put his name on the birth certificate (Which I’m not.) and we were never married, then I have sole custody of my child. Let’s say he does decide to try and get any type of visitation with my child, how much of a chance does he have? I don’t know how to prove the marijuana or anything, and he could just use my drinking, if only one time, against me. I don’t want this to be a he-said she-said in court, if it escalates to that point.

My boyfriend now is a great guy and we plan on getting married and he wants to adopt my son once we’re married.
This isn’t about keeping my son away from his dad, this is about not letting someone get away with completely abandoning the both of us and then trying to step in as if nothing happened. I love my son and I want him to have a great life. My boyfriend, well, fiancee, I guess loves the both of us dearly. I’ve known him for years and I know that we’re going to have a great life together. I also am putting ‘unknown’ on the birth certificate under the father section, but I know that my ex can go in and request a paternity test.
